Why I Travel: 7 Gifts to My Soul

Anyone else like to visit churches and cemeteries on their vacations? I do, and I will tell you why. But first …

I’m thinking about traveling, again. Shhh, don’t tell anyone! I am searching the web, making calls, and reservations. I’m so excited!

You see, I’ve always loved to travel. Even when I didn’t travel, I planned to travel. I looked out my window and knew there was much more than my backyard.

The reason is “the pause” that only travel brings. It breaks our usual routine. It gives us a new mindset. It changes how we do things every day, after day, after day. BLAH! 😝 Because the best part is we come back excited to be home and do it again!

The 7 Gifts to My Soul

Travel reminds me of my purpose. My heart and mind have time to reflect. In the quiet, I feel God’s presence and shift my perspective.

Travel makes me brave. My fears cast away. I’m open to new adventures, things I would never try at home.

Travel shows me the world. God is the artist who created the most beautiful things and places. We seem to pay more attention when we leave home.

Travel keeps me grateful. Grateful for the special moments with unforgettable people. Leaves me feeling blessed and forever thankful!

Travel makes my connections stronger. Our family plays together. We enjoy new memories with old friends. We meet new forever friends.

Travel draws me closer to God. Maybe it’s being on a journey? I visit local churches. I say prayers of protection for us and our loved ones.

Travel reveals time. Maybe because it goes by so fast when we’re having fun? It makes me realize that we’re here for such a short while. So I often visit cemeteries when traveling. I did this in my 20s, and now, definitely in midlife!

Just like now, in this pandemic, we’re in a pause. So I hope we’ve all had time to calm our souls. “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.”- Psalm 4:8 (NIV)

But our time is running out, and life is to be lived. “Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered- how fleeting my life is.” – Psalm 39:4 (NIV)
